Reporter, journalist, soldier, short-story writer, novelist, dramatist, deep-sea fisherman, and big game hunter, Ernest Hemingway was a man whose unique mastery of the art of writing influenced the style of an entire generation of writers.
Ernest Hemingway, one of six children, was born into the family of small town doctor at Oak Park Illinois, on July 1899. As his father, became to love the outdoors and beginning an excellent hunter and fisherman. His mother was religious and music teacher. Ernest's childhood he spent near Michigan Lake. His parents wanted him to become a doctor, but after graduation from high school, he began his writing career as a sport reporter for the Kansas City Star. During the World War I he worked as an ambulance driver in Italy. He was badly wounded by enemy fire too and spent several weeks in a hospital in Milan. After World War I he lived in Europe where he work hard to became a writer. Joining the literacy circle of expatriate American writers brought together by Gertrude Stein, Hemingway profited from his association with writers like her, Ezra Pound and Francis Scott Fitzgerald. He wrote his first three works. With the publication of The Sun Also Rises in 1926, his reputation as a novelist was established. Hemingway made many trips, including several safaris in Africa. At the beginning of the Spanish Civil War he went to the Spain. The World War II saw Hemingway serving again in the pole of the war correspondent. When the war ended, he settled in Cuba. During this period of his life, he talked with many of the fishermen. During the last year of his life, Hemingway was very ill. And on July 1961 Hemingway committed suicide by firing both charges of a double barrelled shotgun.
Ernest Hemingway wrote in three periods. In the first period he wrote mainly stories and novels, such as In Our Time, The Sun Also Rises and Fiesta. The best known novel of this period is A Farewell to Arms. This novel told us about a young soldier who fall in love with a nurse. But the war was everywhere around them. When he was in Spain, he studied the bullfighting and wrote Death in the Afternoon.
In the second period Ernest Hemingway visited Africa. Here he took a lot of hunting experiences. After returning home he wrote The Green Hills of Africa, The Snows of Kilimanjaro. With experience from the Spanish Civil War he wrote The Fifth Column.
During the last, the third period, he wrote book For Whom the Bell Tolls. The novel emphasizes the openness of humanity and the idea that a loss of liberty anywhere means the loss of liberty everywhere. This idea is well expressed by the hero. Robert Jordan is American teacher which fall in love in young Spanish girl. Then came the World War II and Hemingway stayed a war correspondent in China, London and Normandy. During his life in Cuba, he wrote The Old Man and the Sea. This novel told us about permanent fight between a man and a nature. In 1954 the Swedish Academy awarded him the Nobel Prize for his powerful, style-forming mastery of the art of modern narration, as most recently revealed in The Old Man and the Sea. It was his last book, because then he fall in depression and he stay an alcoholic.
All his stories and novels are short, simple and full of facts.
